I strive each day to learn something new regarding my art and work. Those bad paintings that will eventually be gessoed over, to be again covered with another layer of paint, offer a learning experience like none other.
The key for me was realizing that the painting does not control me. Nor does the scene before me, or the brushes or palette, or the venue in which the painting is to be placed. The painting comes from within, with only my ability, knowledge, and determination holding sway over the process.
I paint what I feel like painting. Using the brushes and paint as an extension of myself. My goal as an artist is to record the things I feel are important at the time. Whether that thing be a simple rock, cloud, or a long lost building or person.
I am selfish in the fact that I do this for me. It gives me pleasure to paint from life. To lay a brushstroke down with the correct value and color. To catch the light of the day. To convey a feeling...the feeling that made me stop and say, "Man! I have got to paint that!" If I can get these feelings across to those who view my paintings, part of my goal has been completed.
I welcome your comments regarding my art, and am always looking for plein air artists in the area to paint with. Thanks for visiting.
